Frequently Asked Questions
Does Oklahoma license window and glazing contractors?
No. The Construction Industries Board issues licenses for electrical, mechanical and plumbing work, and runs a registration program for roofing contractors under the Roofing Contractor Registration Act. Glazing is not on that list, and no state window installer credential exists to be checked. If a bidder hands you an Oklahoma glazing license number, the number is not a real thing.
Insurance, workers' compensation and references on comparable houses are what genuinely can be checked, and we send all three across before anybody has to ask twice.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Edmond?
A like-for-like replacement in an unchanged opening is repair work. The City of Edmond treats a change in window or door size as a residential alteration, which is a permit path and asks for a dimensioned floor plan with the application.
So enlarging an opening for egress, cutting in a new window, or converting a flat window to a projecting bay all land on the permit side of that line. We tell you which side your job falls on at quotation, not afterwards.
My windows are foggy. Do I need whole new windows?
Usually not. Fog between the panes is a failed perimeter seal in the insulating glass unit, and the frame, sash and hardware around it are a separate question. On most 1990s Edmond windows we can order a new sealed unit to the measured size, deglaze the sash, and put the window back into service for a fraction of a replacement.
We only recommend against it when the sash has bowed, the jamb liner has gone brittle, or more than half the units on that elevation have already gone.
What window ratings actually matter in Edmond?

The current criteria for that band ask for a solar heat gain coefficient at or below 0.23 and a U-factor at or below 0.28. In a cooling-dominated climate the solar number is doing the heavy work. Air leakage is worth reading too, because there is very little in this landscape to slow the wind down before it reaches your west wall.
Will impact glass protect my house from a tornado?
No, and we will not sell it that way. Laminated glass is tested against small objects at particular speeds. A violent tornado carries structural debris well beyond anything residential glazing is rated for, and in that event the wall and the roof fail before the argument about glass matters.
What laminated glass genuinely buys you here is hail resistance, real noise reduction near the interstate, and a serious obstacle to a smash-and-reach break-in. Those are good reasons. Tornado protection is not one.
How long does a whole-house window job take?
Ordering is the long part. Units built to your measured openings typically run several weeks from a domestic plant, longer for shaped, oversized or specialty glass. The install itself is usually two to four days on a typical Edmond house, and we work one elevation at a time so the building is never open on more than one side. Repair work, meaning balances, rollers, operators, screens and sealed units, is normally scheduled within the week.
